Impact of UJA’s investment in Bat Yam:
- High school dropout rate for Ethiopian pupils has fallen from 9% in 2007 to 1%
- Poverty rate amongst Ethiopian families has dropped from 70% in 2007 to 45%
- Unemployment rate within the Ethiopian community has dropped from 40% in 2007 to 5.6%
Bat Yam is home to the fastest growing Ethiopian-Israeli community in Israel. To advance this community and accelerate its integration, UJA and its partners in Israel have invested in educational, vocational and young leadership programs, including:
- After-school educational enrichment for children and youth
- Hot meal programs
- Educational enrichment in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)
- Vocational training in various lines of work, including nursing, early childhood education, bookkeeping, bus driving, and more.
Why UJA needs to invest more:
UJA Federation must ensure that we fulfill our promise to the Ethiopian-Israeli citizens of Bat Yam, a promise to properly integrate them into their new home, and to ensure that they become active, productive members of Israeli society.
